Under the Red and Orange Covid-19 Traffic light framework and in accordance with University of Auckland Policy the following applies:

All guest over 12yrs will be required to show their Vaccine Certificate to enter the Centre.

The wearing of face masks is mandatory for all visitors.

All visitors must also  sign in with the NZ Covid Tracer App QR format. Physical contact register/sign-in sheets will be available to those patrons who do not have a smartphone.

Note: Children under 12yrs and those with medical exemption will not need to provide a Vaccine Certificate to visit.

All payments will be contactless and only electronic payment means (eftpos/credit card) will be available. Note: a 1.2% surcharge applies to credit card transactions.

To ensure safe distancing  The Discovery Centre will be divided into discrete zones and a one-way system will operate at all times.

The Centre is restricted to a maximum of 30 patrons at any one time.

Booking is not required.

Parking is not permitted on University Grounds under the traffic light system other than for patrons with mobility impairment.  A valid mobility impairment sign will be required to be displayed and will be checked by staff. 

These measures are in place to protect your safety.

Parking is available in the Department of Conservation (DOC) car parks above the main beach.  From there, it is an easy 250-metre (five-minute walk) up to the Discovery Centre. There is NO public parking outside of the Centre

Distance from State Highway 1 is 33.5km

Travel time: 38 mins

  1. At Wellsford, turn left onto Matheson Road (signs for Tomarata/Whangaripo Valley/Pakiri Beach)
  2. Continue onto Whangaripo Valley Road
  3. Turn left onto Pakiri Road
  4. Turn left onto Goat Island Road
  5. Park in the parking areas and follow the signs and path to the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre!

Directions from Auckland (South)

Distance from State Highway 1 is 84km

Travel time:1 hour 10 mins

  1. Take State Highway 1 across the Harbour Bridge
  2. At Warkworth, turn right onto Sandspit Road
  3. Turn left onto Matakana Road
  4. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Leigh Road
  5. Continue onto Hauraki Road
  6. Turn left onto Seatoun Avenue
  7. Turn left onto Pakiri Road
  8. Take the second right onto Goat Island Road
  9. Park in the parking areas and follow the signs and path to the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre!
